The StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo, will from today for the next 10 years be called the MTN Omondi Stadium after the telecommunication company and KCCA FC entered a partnership.

The new naming rights holders and the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) club renamed the stadium in honour of Philip Omondi, a legend that gave so much to football in the country.

Anisha Muhoozi, the  KCCA FC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) had this to say at the unveiling of the partnership in Kampala on Thursday.

“The club has enjoyed working with MTN over the years and was, therefore, honoured to extend the relationship further by granting the MTN brand naming rights for the stadium.”

MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Somdev Sen, emphasized the company’s role in sports.

“MTN Uganda has a long history of involvement in sports in this country and has been associated with KCCA FC for long,” said Somdev.

“As the leading supporter of sports in the country, we considered it befitting that we further cement our association to this club.

“This partnership will be executed as part of the club’s bigger plans to upgrade its home.”

On the new stadium name, Somdev paid tribute to the KCCA and Uganda Cranes legend, Phillip Omondi.

“Philip Omondi had an illustrious career, so MTN and KCCA FC felt that his name should be kept alive in the home where he spent much of his career,” said Somdev.

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, also the club patron, welcomed the news and gave an update on the new stadium redevelopment.

“We do wish to assure you that we have scrutinized each and everything,” said the Lord Mayor.

“This partnership we have entered is going to make the stadium a top facility.

“There is quite a lot we are going to benefit which may not be observed in financial terms. What we are going to do is going to be in a phased manner.

“We hope that by next week we shall have signed a contract to begin the building of the stadium.”

KCCA are 13-time Ugandan champions, only three behind record winners SC Villa.
