Saddam Juma late strike sinks Express

Vipers 1-0 KCCA

Ibrahim Saddam Juma earned Vipers maximum points against rivals Express with a late strike in a fiercely contested league match at Buikwe on Tuesday.

Both sides went into the game fully aware that nothing short of maximum points will leave their title hopes in balance and played a physical but speedy game.

William Wadri twice had chances to put the hosts into the lead but shot wide while Erisa Ssekisambu hit the woodwork.

Simon Sserunkuma and Vincent Kayizzi also had chances for the visitors but were kept at bay by Ismail Watenga.

The first half was dominated by a physical battle between marauding fullbacks Nicholas Wadada and Ismail Kazibwe.

In the second half, the hosts remained the better side attacking wise and their persistence paid off with four minutes to time when Juma netted the winner.

Ssekisambu took on the visitors’ backline manned by Bob Kasozi before shooting at Ali Kiggundu who parried the ball into Juma’s path and attacking midfielder made no mistake but put the ball at the back of the net.

The goal was received by mixed reactions from either fans with the Red Eagles throwing objects on the pitch.

This forced centre referee Ali Sabira to end the game a few minutes after re-start but the violence continued and its reported that one Express fan lost his life in the process.

George ‘Best’ Nsimbe’s side are now on 49 points in second position on the 16 team standings while Express drop to third on 48.
