The Uganda Cranes rounded off their CECAFA Pre-CHAN tour in style with a 2-1 victory over Senegal on Thursday evening at the Black Rhino Sports Stadium in Karatu, Tanzania.

The win, secured through second-half goals from StarTimes Uganda Premier League stars – defender Arnold Odong and forward Patrick Kakande – was a welcome response after Tuesday’s narrow defeat to hosts Tanzania.

Coach Morley Byekwaso shuffled his squad heavily for the clash against the reigning CHAN champions — making 10 changes to the starting XI while sticking with goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, who delivered a more composed performance between the posts.

After a cagey first half, the breakthrough arrived just after the hour mark. Substitute Patrick Kakande’s energy won the corner that led to the opener — Joel Sserunjogi delivered the cross and Odong pounced at the far post to put Uganda ahead.

Moments later, Kakande turned from creator to scorer. His high press forced Senegal into a defensive error, earning a penalty when Jude Ssemugabi was fouled by the keeper. Kakande coolly converted from the spot to double the lead in the 68th minute.

Senegal pulled one back late on, but the Cranes comfortably saw out the result — giving the team a lift ahead of their opening CHAN fixture against Algeria on August 4.

The squad now returns home to fine-tune preparations as they look to carry this momentum into the continental championship.
