UPDF 3-1 Mbarara City
NEC 1-0 URA
Thurday’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League action delivered drama at both ends of the table, with NEC strengthening their top-four push and UPDF climbing out of the relegation zone.
At the death in Lugogo’s Omondi Stadium, goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo emerged the unlikely hero, calmly converting a 90+2-minute penalty to secure NEC a 1–0 victory over URA.
The spot kick was awarded after James Jarieko was fouled in the box following a high challenge, and Ssebwalunyo made no mistake from the spot to claim all three points.
The NEC goalkeeper, later named Man of the Match, crowned a fine individual display with the decisive strike as NEC moved to 37 points from 22 matches, consolidating fifth place and edging closer to the top four.
URA, meanwhile, remain stuck in 11th on 22 points after another frustrating outing.
Earlier, UPDF claimed a priceless 3–1 win over fellow strugglers Mbarara City in Bombo.
Emmanuel Ocen opened the scoring in the 32nd minute before Muhammad Kanyike equalised four minutes later.
Andrew Kigozi then took over after the break, striking in the 58th and 77th minutes – the latter assisted by Ivan Bogere – to hand UPDF a vital victory.
That result lifts UPDF to 13th on 17 points, above Mbarara City, who slip to 14th with 16, as the relegation battle tightens further. Action continues on Friday.
