The StarTimes Uganda Premier League’s early picture grew even more interesting on Thursday, as BUL and KCCA recorded statement victories to close the gap at the top.
At the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru, BUL turned on the style to hand leaders Buhimba United Saints their first defeat of the campaign, winning 3-0 in commanding fashion.
Before kick-off, Buhimba had been the league’s surprise story — newcomers with a perfect three wins from three.
But their dream start came to a halt as BUL, who were themselves frustrated by Mbarara City last time out, reacted emphatically.
Ibrahim Mugulusi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, slotting home after sustained pressure.
Seiri Arigumaho added a second on 32 minutes from Aprem Martin’s clever pass, before Jerome Kirya made it 3-0 six minutes later, finishing Hillary Onek’s delivery.
Mugulusi’s creativity and control earned him the Man of the Match accolade as BUL climbed to within a point of the leaders after four games.
Later under the Nakivubo floodlights, KCCA gritted out a 1-0 victory over rivals Express, a result that moved them level on eight points with BUL but remained third on goal difference.
The first half saw Express come close when Rashid Kawawa’s strike rattled the crossbar after fine work by Richard Basangwa, but KCCA gradually grew into the contest.
Their patience was rewarded in the 71st minute when Sammy Ssebaduka headed home the winner from Joel Sserunjogi’s corner kick.
Express pushed for an equaliser — Mikdad Ssenyonga forcing a strong save from Charles Lukwago, but KCCA held on to claim their second win of the campaign.
Ssebaduka’s all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match award. Express remained sixth on four points.
Matchday four continues on Friday, with Kitara welcoming Mbarara City, and SC Villa hosting Police.
