Express 1-2 NEC

StarTimes Uganda Premier League debutants, NEC, will finish in the top six after a stellar season of their first ever top-flight football.

The army side guaranteed their top six finish with a match left to play after beating Express 2-1 at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Monday.

Enoch Ssebagala and a Musa Ssali own goal won it for NEC, while Isaac Wagoina’s first half penalty only proved for a consolation for Express.

NEC’s 14th win in their first ever 28 matches of the top-flight national championship moved them a place above KCCA to fifth on 48 points.

KCCA, three points behind, have played a game fewer.

Express’ 14th defeat of the season just emphasised how poor the Red Eagles have been.

They lie ninth on 32 points, 20 off the top having played a game more than the leaders, BUL.

NEC took the lead on Express’ home turf inside the first five minutes, Pilsner Man of The Match, Enoch Ssebagala, making the most of Gideon Odongo’s assist.

Moment of silence for coach Kajoba

The Red Eagles struck back through a Wagoina penalty on 19 minutes but Cromwell Rwothomio’s effort on 57 minutes was deflected in by Ssali for the visitors’ winner.

Action continues on Tuesday, with a moment of silence being observed for the departed former Uganda Cranes international and goalkeeping coach, Fred Kajoba, who passed on on Monday.

He died aged 55. Kajoba coached clubs including Simba FC, Bright Stars FC and Vipers SC.
