SC Villa 4-2 Mbarara City

StarTimes Uganda Premier League champions, SC Villa, kicked off their title defence in style, dispatching Mbarara City 4-2 at  Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Monday.

Arnold Odong, Jonah Patrick Kakande, Elvis Ngonde and Hakim Kiwanuka scored for coach Morley Byekwaso’s Villa while Seiri Arigumaho and Paul Busolo got Mbarara’s goals.

Villa – third on the table – join leaders Kitara,  NEC and KCCA on three points apiece after one match.

The Jogoos were in the mood from the start, taking the lead on eight minutes when Ngonde set up Odong to open the scoring.

Provider – Ngonde, turned scorer 11 minutes later, seizing initiative from Kakande’s ball and driving in a cracker from over 40 yards for a 2-0 half time lead.

On resumption, it’s like Villa never left; Kakande embarking on an impressive solo run and beating the Mbarara City goalkeeper from an acute angle just one minute into the second half.

If you thought Villa were running away with it at 3-0, then you hadn’t seen much yet.

The defending champions were soon 4-0  up 12 minutes after the third goal, Kiwanuka brilliantly running behind the Mbarara backline to finish off Odong’s earlier craft.

Yet this match was far from over. Mbarara still had something to offer after a largely chaotic performance from them.

The Ankole Lions pulled one goal back nine minutes from full time, Arigumaho scoring that one.

Mbarara further reduced the deficit to put some respect to the scoreline when Busolo scored their second for 4-2, but it was too late for any comeback for the visitors.

Elsewhere at Kavumba Ground, Gerald Ogweti was sent off for Police as the 10-man Cops drew goalless with BUL.
