Police 2-1 Maroons
Police returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Maroons in a lively StarTimes Uganda Premier League encounter at the Kiira Road Police Arena on Wednesday.
After falling to SC Villa in their previous outing, Matia Lule’s side were quick to impose themselves at home, with Congolese forward Bedia Djuma Ikamba leading the charge.
The import opened the scoring in the 18th minute, latching onto a headed Dennis Kalanzi before shaking off his marker and finishing neatly past goalkeeper Hassan Matovu.
Ikamba doubled the advantage just before the half-hour mark, capitalising on a defensive mix-up after a long clearance from Richard Matovu that sailed over the Maroons backline.
The visiting custodian hesitated to clear, allowing Ikamba to slot home his second and fourth of the season to give the Cops a comfortable cushion.
Maroons, however, responded late in the first half when Jackson Nunda’s clever cut-back from the left found Rogers Kiwanuka, who rifled into the top corner to halve the deficit on 42 minutes.
Despite sustained pressure in the second period, the Prisons side could not find a leveller as Police stood firm to claim all three points.
The victory lifted Police three places up to fourth on eight points from five matches — just one behind early leaders Buhimba United Saints, who have a game in hand. Maroons are 10th with four points in as many games.
Matchday Five continues Thursday with BUL hosting Express in Njeru, Lugazi visiting Kitara in Hoima, and Mbarara City entertaining NEC at Rwamanja Stadium.
