The victory earned at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku moved Kitara to 47 points from 25 games, one mark and game ahead of Vipers SC.
BUL had the opportunity to return to the top themselves but could only lose to NEC, who edged them 1-0 in the late kickoff at Lugogo. Kelvin Barni scored for NEC.
NEC’s 13th victory in 25 matches saw them dislodge SC Villa from fourth. At 43 points, NEC are only three behind third placed BUL. Express’ 11th defeat has them ninth on 32 points.
At Wankulukuku, Kitara took the lead inside 10 minutes when a fast break saw Frank Tumwesigye set up Dennis Omedi, the latter side-footing Express goalkeeper Abubaker Yunus for the opener.
Express did equalize seven minutes later when Isaac Wagoina was tripped by Maxwell Owagchiu in the box, the striker stepping up to convert the resultant penalty for his 12th goal of the campaign.
The Red Eagles carried on with the momentum thereafter, creating several problems for Kitara on the break with Alpha Ssali, Mansoor Safi and Wagoina the architects.
With Express not taking advantage of their onslaughts, the visitors, Kitara, emerged from the half time break energized.
Express substitute goalkeeper, Abdul Kimera, was a busy man, making save after another. A fingertip save from Solomon Okwalinga late on was the most eye-catching.
Kitara pressure eventually yielded when Kabon scored the winner from a direct corner at the third attempt.
