Patrick Kakande inspired a fast-starting SC Villa to a 2-0 victory over rivals Express, as the Jogoos moved to seven points from their opening three matches.

SC Villa claimed bragging rights in the latest Kampala derby after defeating Express 2-0 at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, on Wednesday evening.

The victory took Villa to third on seven points from three matches, while Express were brought back down to earth after their impressive 2-0 victory over KCCA last week. The Red Eagles are ninth on three points.

Patrick Kakande was at the heart of Villa’s success, producing his most influential performance yet this season yet. 

The playmaker opened the scoring after just four minutes, bundling home Ibrahim Kasinde’s cross from the right.

Kakande continued to torment the Express defence with his pace and movement, setting up Reagan Mpande for a long-range effort that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Villa could have gone into the break with a bigger advantage, but Arnold Odong headed wide from a free-kick before Andrew Okumu also missed the target from a corner.

Express improved after the interval and created their clearest opportunity when Isaac Wagoina headed Shafik Batambuze’s cross wide from inside the six-yard box.

Villa increasingly looked to defend their lead and attack on the break. Kakande almost turned provider again when his low cross found Kasinde, who side-footed wide at the back post.

 

The hosts eventually sealed victory in added time when substitute Andrew Otim showed persistence to nick a high ball away from goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya and finish into an unguarded net, sparking celebrations among the blue army.

Elsewhere, Lugazi beat Entebbe UPPC 1-0 for their second victory in three matches in Entebbe.

Cromwel Rwothomia scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute to move Lugazi to fifth place on six points. UPPC are just below them on goal difference.
