Maroons 1-0 SC Villa
A first-minute strike from Ivan Mayanja proved decisive as Maroons edged SC Villa 1–0 in a heated StarTimes Uganda Premier League encounter at the Prisons Grounds in Luzira on Saturday.
The result denied the record champions a return to the summit and extended their winless run at Luzira, where they last beat Maroons in 2019.
Mayanja tucked in from Mujahid Ogama after just 57 seconds, stunning a Villa side that entered the match level on 17 points with KCCA, Vipers and Police at the top of a crowded table.
The Jogoos never fully recovered from the early blow, and the afternoon grew more chaotic when Maroons goalkeeper Simon Tamale and Villa’s Geofrey Lubanga Kene were sent off in the 39th minute following an altercation sparked by Tamale kicking a Villa player.
Maroons sacrificed outfield player Ivan Asaba for substitute goalkeeper Matovu Hassan in the 42nd minute, and the stand-in proved equal to everything Villa threw at him.
SC Villa introduced Patrick Jonah Kakande, Tonny Atukunda and three others in a second-half push, but clear chances remained scarce.
Muyomba slowed the game expertly, frustrating the visitors as Kakande and co. struggled to find openings.
Despite sustained late pressure, Villa could not breach Maroons’ disciplined back line.
The result lifts Maroons into the top half, moving them to 12 points, while Villa stay on 17 and risk losing ground to KCCA and Vipers, who have games in hand.
Mayanja deservedly took home the Man of the Match award.
