Mbarara City 1-2 Vipers SC

Allan Okello grabbed a brace of penalties and Yunus Sentamu added the third goal as Vipers SC beat Mbarara City 3-1 at Kakyeka Stadium to move top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League standings on Tuesday.

The Venoms’ fifth win in seven matches moved them to 16 points, one and two above NEC and KCCA, who have each played a game fewer.

It was a bitter pill for hosts Mbarara, who saw their home run without defeat since their loss to NEC on matchday one of last season, ended.

The Ankole Lions, however, still look good in the standings. They are fifth on nine points after seven matches.

At Kakyeka, in-form Okello converted his first penalty in added time of the first half when he sent Mbarara goalkeeper Abdul Kimera the wrong way.

The Cranes forward completed his brace of spot kicks seven minutes into the second half.

In doing so, Okello – who has now scored in three successive matches – joined Mbarara’s Seiri Arigumaho as joint leading scorer on five goals.

Latif Ssenkubuge reduced the deficit for the hosts with a well-timed header in the 56th minute but Sentamu put it out of reach for them with Vipers’ third in the 70th minute.

Action in the Premier League continues on Wednesday with NEC visiting Lugazi and Police at home to Mbale Heroes.
