StarTimes Uganda Premier League leaders Vipers SC edged Maroons 1-0 at the Luzira Grounds on Thursday to open up an eight-point cushion at the summit.
The decisive moment came two minutes into the second half when Allan Okello calmly converted a penalty after a Maroons player was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
It was Okello’s 17th goal of the season – his seventh from the spot – underlining his talismanic role in Vipers’ charge. The playmaker leads the league’s scoring charts, with URA’s Ivan Ahimbisibwe trailing on 12.
The result marked Vipers’ 18th win in 25 matches, taking them to 59 points. Second-placed NEC, who lost to Vipers in their last outing, can trim the gap to five if they beat bottom side Mbale Heroes at Lugogo on Friday.
But until then, coaches John ‘Luyinda’ Ayala and Fred Muhumuza will savour the healthy lead. Maroons remain eighth on 34 points after 25 matches.
Express battle back to hold UPDF
At Nakivubo, Express FC produced a spirited second-half comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against UPDF.
The visitors looked in control when Joseph Janjali punished a poor clearance to open the scoring in the 26th minute, before turning provider eight minutes later as Samuel Ssekamatte doubled the lead.
But the Red Eagles clawed their way back. Sam Ssenyonjo pulled one back on the hour mark before Geofrey Gagganga struck the equaliser, converting Wandera’s delivery to salvage a point.
The draw sees both Express and UPDF move to 33 points, sitting ninth and tenth respectively. More league action continues Friday with three fixtures lined up.
