Group G – Matchday Nine Results
Botswana 0-1 Uganda | Mozambique 1-2 Guinea | Somalia 0-3 Algeria
Uganda Cranes secured a vital 1-0 victory over Botswana in Francistown on Thursday night to keep their hopes alive in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Forward Jude Ssemugabi scored the only goal in the 54th minute, heading home unmarked at the near post from a perfectly delivered corner by StarTimes Uganda Premier League and Vipers star Allan Okello, whose set-piece brilliance proved decisive.
The Cranes displayed composure and tactical discipline throughout, managing Botswana’s aerial threat and long balls effectively.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, Uganda held firm to claim all three points, moving to 18 points with one match remaining in Group G.
Returning goalkeeper Denis Onyango praised his teammates and expressed optimism for the road ahead.
“First of all, I have to thank the team for allowing me back, because after four years of retirement, I was allowed to come back and help where I can,” Onyango said.
“We do not know what the results in Algeria will be, but we have given ourselves a chance. We now have 18 points with one game to go, and if we can make the playoffs, it will be great for the team and the country.”
“It is important that we keep winning and stay positive going into the Africa Cup of Nations in two months.”
Head Coach Paul Put lauded the team’s discipline and effort despite challenging travel and limited preparation time.
“Botswana were dangerous with long balls, so we had to stay organised. We had chances to score earlier, and I think the victory was deserved.
“Denis Onyango’s experience was key; he brings calmness and leadership on and off the pitch,” said Put.
Uganda now prepares for a decisive away clash against Group G leaders Algeria on Tuesday, 14th October 2025.
A strong performance will be crucial if the Cranes are to secure a top-four second-place finish and advance to the playoff stage.
