For the first in seventh attempt, Uganda has reached the quarter finals of the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship after overcoming South Africa 1-0 at Namboole.

Jude Ssemugabi gave Uganda Cranes a first halftime lead but South Africa emerged from the change rooms better and scored three goals to lead 3-1 heading into the final five minutes.

However, two penalties scored by Allan Okello and Rogers Torach in the last minutes gave Uganda a point.

The draw ensured Uganda top group C with seven points and will stay home in the quarter finals playing second placed team in group D that has either of Sudan, Congo or reigning champions Senegal.

Elsewhere, Algeria drew goalless Niger at Nyayo stadium to join Uganda as the second placed team from group C and will thus play the quarter final at Aman stadium in Zanzibar against table toppers in group D.
