- The Gambia 1-2 Uganda
Uganda Cubs made history by qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup after edging The Gambia 2-1 in the play off at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
James Bogere scored a brace in the first half to overcome an early goal from the West African nation.
The Ugandan side, managed by former Kitara FC coach Brian Ssenyondo will become the first side ever to play at a world cup event of any level.
Uganda Premier League CEO Bernard Bainamani congratulated the lads and attached the Fufa Juniors League to the achievement.
“It was all started with the introduction of the Fufa Juniors League some years ago were all UPL clubs were supposed to have a junior side as a licensing requirement,” he stated.
“So, this historical achievement is not by accident but by design and has been a step-by-step process,” added Bainamani.
The Uganda Cubs is the second national football team to qualify for a world cup event after the U20 in 2019 but their appearance was hindered by the outbreak of COVID19.
