A three-day CAF Safe Stadium Workshop meant to prepare Uganda for the CHAN 2024 tournament comes to a close this Thursday at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The initiative comes ahead of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania jointly hosting CHAN 2024 in February next year.

It started on Tuesday, November 19 and seeks to standardise safety and security operations across CAF Member Associations.

Forty participants are attending the workshop. They include members of FUFA such as StarTimes Uganda Premier League clubs, local security agencies and stadium management teams.

CAF and FIFA instructors for the workshop include Dr. Christian Emeruwa (CAF Head of Safety and Security), Ababacar Sene (CAF Security Department), Khakame Alan Chikanimr (CAF Safety and Security Instructor) and Katharina Steinberg (FIFA Safety and Security Event Operations Specialist).

While making the opening remarks, the Head of the Security Department at CAF emphasised the importance of the workshop.

“The idea is that we need to change how we are doing things in Africa. We (CAF) have changed competitions, now we are working on Safety and Security. We want to make sure that when people turn on the TV, it is the same thing being seen,” said Dr. Emeruwa.

He also mentioned that there will be subsequent training online with CAF and FIFA. Participants will be awarded certification.

FUFA Chief Executive Officer, Edgar Watson, who opened the event, re-echoed his boss, Moses Magogo’s commitment to football in the country.

“As a country, we intend to be in the first position on and off the pitch,” said Watson. Uganda is the 13th country to have the training.
