10-man Express see off BUL

Saturday result

BUL FC 1-2 Express FC

Ten-man Express moved one place up to 10th in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League after beating BUL 2-1 away at the Fufa Technical Centre, Njeru on Saturday.

Boban Zirintusa and Anwar Ntege, who was later sent off for dangerous play, scored the Red Eagles goals while Hillary Onek got BUL’s consolation in injury time.

This is the second successive game Express are having a player sent off.

Derrick Ngoobi was also sent off in their previous match against Onduparaka.

This win, Express’ only sixth in 20 matches of a laborious season, moves them to 25 points – 11 away from relegation zone – in 10th place.

Defeat for BUL, who are yet to win a game in the second round, was the Jinja side’s seventh in 21 matches.

But because of an impressive first round, BUL temporarily (Vipers would leapfrog them if they beat Blacks Power in the late kickoff) remained third on the table on 30 points., 13 behind leaders SC Villa.

The contrast is true for Express, who have struggled through the campaign.

Before thrashing Onduparaka 4-1 in their previous outing, Express had gone 11 matches without a win.

That they have now won in succession, scoring six goals against two, will give coach James Odoch’s side confidence heading into the final bend of the season.

Here at the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru, they took the lead on 11 minutes when Zirintusa connected home Allan Kayiwa’s corner.

The Red Eagles got their second on 34 minutes when Arthur Kiggundu set up Ntege before the goal scorer took an early shower on 58 minutes.

BUL did pull one back in the third minute of added time but it was a little too late to salvage anything from the game.
