Vipers SC 2-3 BUL
BUL further emphasized their title credentials when they beat StarTimes Uganda Premier League defending champions, Vipers SC, 3-2 on Friday to go five points clear at the top.
Nicholas Mwere, Lawrence Tezikya and Ibrahim Mugulusi scored BUL’s goals while Yunus Sentamu and Salem Ekbad netted for hosts Vipers at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
Coach Abbey Kikomeko’s BUL have the most wins in the league – nine in 12 – so far.
The Jinja side now have 29 points, five ahead of Vipers both having played the same number of matches.
BUL have been knocking on the title door for some good years now, and results, the manner they are getting them, and against whom suggest they could be more serious this time round.
Here at Kitende they shocked the reigning champions inside seven minutes when Mwere thumped home a rebound after a poorly cleared corner for a 1-0 lead.
Vipers could have leveled on 28 minutes but BUL goalkeeper Tom Ikara stopped Sentamu’s effort after a deliciously weighted searching pass from Allan Okello found the Venom’s striker.
But the visitors never stopped coming, and soon they were handed a gift when Vipers defenders dilly-dallied with the ball and Tezikya caught one in possession.
Tezikya then embarked on a journey into Vipers penalty area, with the beaten defenders hanging onto desperate hope that Fabien Mutombora in goal saves the day.
But Tezikya had other ideas, the forward rounding Mutombora and then lofting the ball over what was left of Vipers defenders on the goalline for a 2-0 half time lead.
Vipers did pull one back through Sentamu on 51 minutes but Mugulusi restored BUL’s two-goal lead in the 67th minute.
Ekbad’s goal for Vipers to make it 2-3 with nine minutes left to play did provide for a nail baiting finish but BUL held on for all three points.
