- Vipers 1-0 El Merriekh (Agg 2-2, Vipers win on away on goals rule)
Uganda’s Caf Champions League representatives marched on to the first round thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Sudan’s El Merriekh in the second of the preliminary round.
Abraham Ndugwa was the match winner for the league champions scoring just a minute into the second stanza.
The Venoms came into the game aware that a 1-0 win will take them to the next round and started well but missed opportunities with Tito Okello and Daniel Sserunkuma the chief culprits in the first half.
But Ndugwa made up for all that with a nice run behind the defender to slot home off a long ball from Geoffrey Wasswa.
Vipers resorted to defending but had goalie Bashir Sekagya to thank for twice making point blank saves to deny El Merriekh forwards.
They will face Algeria’s Constantine who edged Gambia’s Gamtel 1-0 over two legs with the winner reaching the lucrative group stages.
