Express improved their chances of survival by edging fellow relegation strugglers Mbarara City 1-0 at Wankulukuku on Wednesday.
Substitute David Ndihabwe’s volley was enough for the six-time champions to claim all three points.
It was a game of wastefulness from both teams, including substitute Joseph Ssemujju missing a penalty for Express.
But in the end the Red Eagles came out tops to move to 22 points, only one behind their day’s opponents and two clear of Proline and Masavu, the only teams just below them.
This is after the two – Masavu and Proline – played out a 1-1 draw in Bugonga with Gift Ali’s goal cancelled out by Athur Ssemazi’s 82nd minute leveler.
Elsewhere, Vipers squandered the opportunity to close in on leaders Villa as they were held goalless by Bul.
The Venoms remain third on 43 points, six behind Villa.
