Express FC have been crowned as the league winners for the 2020/21 season.
The Red Eagles were declared league champions a couple of weeks ago after being at the top of the table by the time Fufa invoked the 75% rule after a Presidential directive put all sports events under lockdown.
The crowning ceremony that was conducted under strict SOP guidelines happened on Tuesday at StarTimes head offices in Kampala.
The trophy handover was done by Fufa President Moses Magogo and the trophy received by Express entourage thank included goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga (also Best GK), Coach Wasswa Bbosa and club secretary Ssuubi Kiwanuka who represented the board.
In his statement, Magogo congratulated the league champions, thanked StarTimes and also revealed why Vipers were never crowned.
“As Fufa, we are very excited to have such a moment given the times we are in,” he stated. “We didn’t have such a ceremony last year because the club (Vipers) were not ready to receive the trophy. Both Fufa and UPL were ready to hold such a ceremony,” he added.
StarTimes CEO, Franklin Wang who spoke on behalf of the company reiterated commitment to support local sports.
“As StarTimes, we congratulate Express FC for winning the 2020/21 season and we want to assure Ugandans that StarTimes commitment to support local sports will continue. We thank Ugandans for supporting StarTimes and our local teams,” said Company CEO, Franklin Wang.
The title is Express’ 7th in their club history and they become the third winner in as many seasons StarTimes have been the main sponsors of the league
