Cosafa Under-20 tournament

Uganda 1-1 Malawi

Semifinals set for December 14

Steven Mukwala scored for Uganda against Malawi as the Hippos came from behind to draw 1-1 and storm the Cosafa Under-20 Championship semifinals on Monday.

Having fired blanks in the opening two games, this was the best way possible the striker could repay coach Matia Lule’s faith.

The Hippos, who were without suspended captain Muhammad Shaban, looked to be on the way out after Fred Madinga gave the Malawians the lead on 70 minutes.

But Mukwala pounced, slotting home after substitute Frank Tumwesigye’s effort had been parried away.

Both teams finished level on five points in their group but the Hippos prevailed by virtue of having a superior goal difference of two, just one ahead of Malawi.

Uganda’s points came from the 2-0 opening day win over Zambia, as well as Friday’s 2-2 draw with Swaziland.

Monday’s result meant the Hippos became the first team to make the semifinals.

South Africa later joined them after a 2-1 win over Egypt.

Egypt and Uganda are the two guest teams at the tournament.

The semifinal draws will be known on Tuesday after Group C leaders Lesotho play Namibia and Zimbabwe face Angola.
