Express FC 0-2 Arua Hill SC
The 2021/22 StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) season got off to a blistering start on Friday, with newcomers Arua Hill SC shocking defending champions Express 2-0 at the Red Eagles home in Wankulukuku.
Both teams lived with each other for the first hour, but Robert Eseru took full advantage of the game’s MVP, Alfred Leku’s pass to punish the home side with the new boys first ever Premier League goal.
Express pushed for the equaliser but coach Livingstone Mbabazi’s well-drilled Arua Hill defied and looked more dangerous when they broke free.
The Red Eagles new signing from Soltilo Bright Stars, Joseph Akandwanaho, at one point played at left back position and it was clear how he and defender Murushid Juuko struggled when Leku and company poured forward.
It was a matter of time, and Arua Hill indeed doubled their advantage, new signing Samuel Ssekamatte teeing on Rashid Kawawa to score with five minutes left to play.
The Leopards win has them level on three points with Mbarara City, who dispatched Soltilo Bright Stars 3-1 in Western Uganda, but the Ankole Lions top because they have scored more goals.
What will give Arua Hill even more satisfaction is that they beat the league and Cecafa champions at their fullest best, with all the star names playing.
George Senkaaba, last season’s star-man Eric Kambale, and Martin Kizza, fresh from helping Uganda beat Rwanda in the World Cup qualifiers, all had a go at the the visitors but Arua Hill never budged.
Matchday one continues on Sunday with three games, including two involving Vipers and KCCA, on card.
