Nsibambi says Cranes showed character

Sunday Cecafa result

Uganda 1-1 Ethiopia

Uganda Premier League (UPL) star Derrick Nsibambi struck late to salvage a point in the 1-1 draw with Ethiopia on Sunday and book the Cranes a semifinal berth in the 2017 Cecafa Cup in Kakamega, Kenya.

The Cranes were on the verge of elimination after falling behind to St George star Abdela Abubaker San’s goal on 21 minutes.

But coach Basena’s men, who lost two players in the process as KCCA players Isaac Muleme and Timoth Awany were sent off, fought on.

KCCA striker Nsibambi, who also netted a brace in the 5-1 mauling of South Sudan last Friday, struck at the death to ensure Uganda progress to the last four with five points from three matches.

“We showed character by coming back from a goal down,” Nsibambi told Daily Monitor in Kakamega, “I feel proud to have scored the goal that helped my team go through.”

Nsibambi played alongside Police striker and league’s leading goal scorer with seven goals, Hood Kaweesa, but the Ethiopians were simply unmoved.

“The goals will come from our partnership with Hood Kaweesa,” assured Nsibambi, “And we will battle for the title.” Uganda will know their semifinal opponents after Monday’s matches.
