SC Villa 2-1 The Saints

SC Villa reduced the gap on leaders KCCA to four points in the Azam Uganda Premier League (UPL) standings following an impressive 2-1 victory over The Saints at Namboole on Tuesday.

Alex Kitata’s neat finish in the first half and a jaw-dropping winner from the wing by an outstanding Godfrey Lwesibawa in the second period saw the 16-time record champions go second on 15 points.

George Ssenkaaba, in for withdrawn veteran Godfrey Wakaza, did capitalize on Yasin Mugabi’s howler five minutes from time but his goal could only pass for the Saints’ consolation.

Villa’s victory was a welcome start for new coach Shafiq Bisaso, who was taking charge of his first game following the sacking of Deo Sserwadda recently.

The hosts went ahead on 14 minutes when Lwesibawa released Kitata with a low cross, the striker easing past a hapless Joseph Sebuliba in the Saints goal.

Goal provider turned scorer later in the second half. Out of nothing, Lwesibawa picked a long ball and drove it from the right touchline over a faultily positioned Ssebuliba for an eventual winner on 54 minutes.

Villa’s domination increased as the Blues created one chance after another. But it took goalkeeper Ssebuliba’s heroics and striker Umar Kasumba’s wastefulness to keep the scoreline decent for the visitors.

And they could have paid for their profligacy but Ssenkaaba late goal only counted for the Saints’ consolation in the end.
