The 16-time record champions, SC Villa, start their 2019/20 StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) on Thursday night against newcomers Kyetume at Namboole.

Coach Edward Kaziba, the new Jogoos coach, and his assistant Ibrahim Kirya have spent the better part of pre-season testing tens of aspiring footballers after seeing over 10, including Mike Serumaga, Joseph Semujju and Ashraf Mandela among others leave.

Also, the Blues were yet to complete documentation of most of their new recruits ahead of their season opener, which will be televised on official broadcasters StarTimes.

“My prayer is that all our players are licensed in time because there is a lot of bureaucracy in the process,” said Kaziba, “We have been preparing well. It is important to start the league with victory.”

His striker Bashir Mutanda, together with skipper Asuman Alishe, Charles Lwanga and Ambrose Kirya among others  remain the core still at the club.

And he is optimistic ahead of the kickoff. “We are prepared,” said Mutanda, “Although some players still have documentation to complete, the available ones we are ready to play and give 100 per cent. And I hope to score for the team.”

Kyetume, coached by experienced George Nsimbe, will be looking to claim the Jogoos scalp to gather early momentum.

The newcomers boast of experienced players like skipper Vincent Kayizzi, striker Robert Ssentongo and Elukhana Nkuggwa.

They have also added new recruits like Julius Ntambi and Siraje Turyamureba. “We believe our squad can compete favourably and in our conversation with coach George, our target is to finish in the top five,” said club chairman Ruben Mubiru Kaggwa.

The league continues on Friday, with match day one wrapping on Saturday when defending champions KCCA host Wakiso Giants.
