SC Villa pip Express to go top

Friday result

SC Villa 1-0 Express

Alex Kitata scored the solitary goal as SC Villa edged fierce rivals Express 1-0 at Masaka Recreational Grounds on Friday to ascend to the top of the Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) table.

The 16-time record national champions, who are desperate for their first league title since 2004, can now end the first round top if they win their next two matches.

Villa lead standings on 25 points, two and three ahead of closest challengers Police and KCCA, after 12 matches.

Coach Wasswa Bbosa’s men have now won the most matches at eight – majority of them 1-nil victories.

Kitata made sure of yet another 1-0 win in Masaka two minutes from time when he salvaged maximum points for the hosts when it seemed like Express would hold out for a point.

It is completely contrasting fortunes for Express, the six-time champions.

The Red Eagles are trapped in the bottom three with just 11 points from 12 matches. There have won just three.
