Cosafa U-20 Challenge Cup

Zambia 0-2 Uganda (Muhammad Shaban 51’, 54’)

Muhammad Shaban was in scintillating form as the Hippos striker scored a brace to down hosts Zambia 2-0 in the Cosafa Under 20 tournament on Wednesday.

The win catapulted Uganda’s underage team, the Hippos, to the top of Group B with three points after one round of matches.

In a hysterical first half, both sides created chances and Zambia captain Prince Mumba could have put the hosts ahead only for his shot come off the woodwork.

Lameck Banda was also denied by a fine stop from Uganda keeper Keni Saidi as the Hippos withstood early pressure.

Shaban, who along with partner Steven Mukwala troubled the opponents’ backline with their pace, then had a header hit the crossbar following a fancy flick and cross from Frank “Zaga” Tumwesigye.

He, however, could not to be denied six minutes into the second half though when Mukwala latched onto a floated ball on the right to beat his man before crossing low for the onrushing Shaban to slot home at the near post.

The KCCA striker pounced again three minutes later, using his pace to be at the end of a long ball from goalkeeper Keni and beat Daniel Sikanyika for the second time.

Malawi, who edged Swaziland 3-2, are second in the group because the Hippos have a superior goal difference.

The Hippos, who are one of two guest teams, return to action on Sunday against Swaziland.

The top team from each of the three groups and the best second place finisher will qualify for the semifinals at the 12-team tournament.
