Mbarara City 1-1 URA
Mbarara City needed a late Jude Ssemugabi goal to earn a point on the two clubs’ opening day of the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) season on Friday.
Steve Mukwala, last season’s league top scorer with 13 goals while on loan at the now-relegated Maroons, had opened his account when he put URA ahead on the half hour.
The game played at Kakyeka Stadium was not devoid of drama as each side squandered a chance from a penalty spot.
Mbarara City’s new signing Bashir Mutanda missed his kick from the spot when the match was begging for a goal early on.
And he and Mbarara got punished when Mukwala gave the visitors the lead, the striker turning in Joachim Ojera’s ball on 30 minutes.
But Mukwala’s joy was short-lived after Mbarara goalkeeper Muhammad Ssekeba saved his penalty three minutes into the second half.
The visitors will rue what could have been had Mukwala converted that for a 2-0 lead.
Indeed, they saw their would-be three points collapse to one as Ssemugabi levelled matters nine minutes from time to earn Mbarara a point.
