KCCA 1-0 Primeiro de Agosto
A second half strike from veteran centre forward Geoffrey Sserunkuma was enough for KCCA to win 1-0 against Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto in the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
KCCA Coach Mike Mutebi made a couple of changes to his starting side that played against Bul on Tuesday in the Azam Uganda Premier League with Benjamin Ochan and Derrick Nsibambi starting ahead of Charles Lukwago and Sulaimon Akinyemi respectively.
It was a first half of low events but Sserunkuma missed a clear cut opportunity in the third minute before the visitors had settled.
Another talking point in the half was in the 42nd minute when the centre referee pointed to the spot after what appeared like a handball in the area but after consultation with his assistant, he changed mind and gave free kick which went to waste.
Mutebi made an immediate change after the break with Brian Majwega replacing Mutyaba and the move paid dividends as the winger assisted the goal four minutes after coming on.
His well taken effort from the corner kick was met by Sserunkuma who headed home to send the home fans into frenzy.
From then on, the hosts became dominant with Mucureezi the fulcrum of attacks but chance after chance, they were put to waste.
Not even the introduction of Vincent Kayizzi and Robert Ssentongo changed a thing and it had to be Benjamin Ochan at the other end to save KCCA brushes after he tipped a would be brilliant own goal from defender Timothy Awany.
The two teams face off in the return on Sunday February 19, with a draw enough to see KCCA set up a date with African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.
