Afcon 2023 qualifiers
Thursday Group F results
Niger 0-2 Uganda
Algeria 0-0 Tanzania
Uganda beat Niger 2-0 in Marrakech, Morocco on Thursday night but the result was not enough to see them qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations due in Ivory Coast next year.
Aziz Kayondo and Joseph Ochaya scored Uganda’s goals in the first half but because Tanzania held out for a goalless draw in Annaba, Algeria, the Cranes did not make it.
Algeria ended the qualification campaign on 16 points from six matches, with Tanzania second on eight, one more than Uganda.
Only the top two from Group F joined 22 others for Africa’s biggest football showpiece due in January and February of next year.
Uganda went ahead on 17 minutes when Kayondo’s attempted cross from the left outsmarted everyone, including Niger goalkeeper Naim Van Attenhoven, for a 1-0 lead.
The Cranes doubled their advantage six minutes to half time when Ochaya deflected in Milton Karisa’s clean strike from inside the area.
But Tanzania held on for a draw in Algeria to finish second in the group and above Uganda by a point.
