SC Villa 2-1 Maroons
Sixteen-time record champions, SC Villa, came from behind to beat Maroons 2-1 at Wankulukuku on Thursday and go fourth in the table as the StarTimes Uganda Premier League second round got underway.
Talisman John Patrick Kakande scored a brace for Villa while Fred Amaku’s opener was relegated to a consolation.
The win, Villa’s eighth in 16 matches, moved them one place up to fourth on 29 points, dislodging their day’s victims, Maroons – who fell one slot and point below. Leaders, BUL, are on 33 points.
Maroons conjured up an early scare at Wankulukuku when they went ahead on eight minutes through Amaku after a good counter attack orchestrated by Abraham Tusubira.
But from then on it was Villa probing, with Hakim Kiwanuka missing the target with goalkeeper, Hannington Ssebwalunyo, to beat on 27 minutes.
The visitors managed to go into the break leading but Villa never stopped asking the questions in the second period, with Joseph Kafumbe’s fierce shot inside the area tipped over by the superb Ssebwalunyo on 54 mins.
Maroons soon caved in, a beautiful move involving Gavin Kizito – whose delicate ball was brilliantly brought down by Abas Kyeyune – the latter crossing low for Kakande to level matters on the hour.
Kakande then struck the winner and his fifth of the season 20 minutes from full time after he trudged through a disappearing Maroons defence to place the ball to Ssebwalunyo’s left. Action continues on Friday as per the fixtures below.
