SC Villa 3-0 NEC
SC Villa picked their first win of the 2023/24 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season when they stopped high flying NEC 3-0 at Wankulukuku on Friday.
A Umar Lutalo strike, an own goal from John Paul Acire and a third goal by Arnold Odong were enough to end NEC’s winning start and earn Villa their very first three points of the campaign.
The win moves the Jogoos four places up to seventh on four points after three matches.
League newcomers, NEC, who won their first two matches of top flight football by scoring six goals against none, are dislodged from the top to second on the table on six points, three behind leaders Kitara.
Kitara in first and NEC in second actually paint a beautiful picture at the top of two newly promoted teams leading the league three matches into the season.
Villa started the new season with a shock 2-1 home defeat to Kitara, following that with a 1-1 draw away at Maroons.
They had to win here to assure their fans they have what it takes. The win was especially important for their new Serbian coach, Dusan Stojanovic, who was desperate for one to kickstart his Villa reign in earnest.
Villa allayed any fears early, Lutalo putting them ahead on 10 minutes.
Sustained home side pressure forced Acire to put the ball into his own net on 42 minutes before Pilsner man of the Match, Odong, took it to half time at 3-0. It never changed.
