Vipers are the 2017/18 Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) champions after dispatching UPDF 4-1 in Kitende on Friday.

Yayo Lutimba, Erisa Ssekisambu, Daniel Sserunkuma and Pius Wangi scored for Vipers after Joseph Janjali had given him UPDF an early lead.

The win followed a 17-game unbeaten run to see them claim the title on 65 points, four more than runners-up KCCA.

The run included wins over title rivals KCCA and SC Villa en route to the title and Sserunkuma, who moved from Express in January, believes the aforementioned victories were pivotal.

“We set out to win maximum points against those two teams and once we achieved that we knew we would be in a very good position,” said Sserunkuma.

Sserunkuma, who netted six goals while still at Express, ended the season as top scorer with 17.

Vipers’ victory means they have ended KCCA’s two-year winning mode. This was Vipers first league title in three years and third overall.

Elsewhere, Express stayed up after beating Masavu 1-0 and Proline, who went down, losing to URA. Masavu and UPDF were the other relegated teams.
