SUPL Sunday result
Vipers SC 1-1 Mbarara City
StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) defending champions, Vipers SC, lost further ground on leaders KCCA following yet another one-all draw, this time against Mbarara City on Sunday.
Needing a win to close the gap on KCCA to three points after Friday’s 1-1 draw with URA, the hosts failed to turn early domination into a substantial lead, allowing a resilient Mbarara to pick a point at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
Daniel ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuma was on the scoresheet once again, netting his 26th league goal since returning to Uganda at Express and Vipers last season.
It was his ninth this campaign, just one behind current leading league scorer, Bashir Mutanda of SC Villa.
The striker thumped home a snapshot after Tito Okello flicked Ibrahim Kiyemba’s ball for a 15th minute lead.
Paul Mucureezi, the former KCCA winger, however, levelled matters for Mbarara, finishing off a flowing move by connecting with Stephen Othieno’s low cross from a quick break nine minutes after the break.
The visitors also had to thank Hillary Mukundane, who was a real bulldozer at the heart of defence.
Mbarara, who welcome KCCA in their opening second round game on Wednesday, stay third with 28 points, three short of Vipers.
