Tuesday results

Arua Hill 0-1 Vipers

Soltilo Bright Stars 1-1 Express

Maroons 1-0 UPDF

It wasn’t pretty football but StarTimes Uganda Premier League defending champions, Vipers SC, ground out a result to steadily continue closing the gap on leaders SC Villa and KCCA.

The Venoms were 1-0 victors away to Arua Hill to move to 39 points, four behind Villa and two adrift of KCCA, on Tuesday.

Abubaker Lawal scored the all-important goal for Vipers.

At 23 and 21 games respectively, KCCA and Villa have played one and three matches more than coach Alex Isabirye’s Vipers.

Each of the 15 teams will play 28 matches this season after the would-have-been 16th, Kyetume, were demoted after failing to fulfil licensing requirements in time.

At the soggy Barifa turf in Arua, Vipers took an early lead in the first minute when the Nigerian forward, Lawal,  controlled right-back Ashraf Mandela’s cross on the edge of the box to shoot home.

Arua Hill remain fifth on 33 points from 22 games despite registering their ninth defeat of the season.

Stars, Eagles share spoils, Maroons win

At Kavumba, coach Asaph Mwebaze’s Soltilo Bright Stars and James Odoch’s Express played out a one-all draw.

Ibrahim Kasinde put Bright Stars ahead on 17 minutes but Express levelled from the spot on 55 minutes through the dependable Allan Kayiwa for his 10th goal of the season.

The result leaves Express ninth on 29 points while Bright Stars are 11th and a point below.

At Luzira Prisons Ground, Fred Amaku scored the only goal of the match, also his 10th of the season, as hosts Maroons beat UPDF 1-0.

The win lifts Maroons to eighth on 30 points from 22 matches, while UPDF remain third from bottom on 22 points after 23 matches.
