Mbarara City 0-1 Vipers

Mbarara City lost their home unbeaten record in top flight football when they lost 1-0 to Vipers at Kakyeka Stadium on Friday.

Substitute Moussa Mbayi scored the game’s only goal as Vipers wheeled away with all three points.

The result moved Vipers to 15 points and into second place (before Saturday games), just above Onduparaka, who drew goalless away to Bul.

Mbarara, who have arguably had a decent start to the campaign for a team just promoted to Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL), are 10th with nine points from eight matches.

Mbayi’s 78th minute goal in this ill-tempered match came after Tony Odur’s effort was parried into the striker’s path by goalkeeper Ali Kimera.

But with large holes in the net, the Congolese forward’s effort went through with most of the home crowd believing the ball had gone wide.

Luckily for Vipers, Azam Uganda official Thadeus Kitandwe quickly provided match officials with the video replay amidst contestation from the home crowd.

Basing on the replay, the officials awarded the goal two minutes later despite the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) System not being applicable in Uganda yet.

But in hindsight, the neutrals will argue that it was indeed a great decision from the officials since the ball actually went in and through gaping holes in the net.
