Vipers, KCCA settle for draw

Result

Vipers SC 1-1 KCCA

Sadam Juma missed a penalty for KCCA as the Lugogo side drew with home team Vipers 1-1 at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Saturday.

Vipers striker Daniel Sserunkuma had opened the scoring in the first half but Filbert Obenchan stabbed home the equaliser early in the second period.

The result leaves coach Javier Martinez Espinoza’s defending champions, Vipers, top on 14 points while Mike Mutebi’s KCCA drop to third on 12.

It was a more fluid game at a nearly fully packed Kitende, with Vipers Geoffrey Wasswa, Moses Waiswa and Duncan Sseninde, plus KCCA’s Sadam, Lawrence Bukenya and Allan Okello putting up some midfield spectacle.

Vipers went ahead on 34 minutes when Noah Wafula released Abraham Ndugwa down the right, the forward crossing across the face of goal for Sseninde to return a cut-back and the unmarked Sserunkuma slotting home.

KCCA returned from the break more determined and won most of the duels.

They drew level two minutes into the second half when Okello delivered a telling free kick, which evaded Vipers legs and landed on Obenchan, who stole it home for the qualiser.

The visitors should have won it moments later when Allan Kyambadde was brought down in the area by Halid Lwaliwa for the referee to point to the spot.

Sadam stepped forward to take it and Vipers forward Fabien Mutombora went the right way to save it for the match to end 1-1.
